The roots of Powertron go back to the 1960's when it was founded as a generator sales and service company.  They were acquired in the mid 1970's by a Chicago based generator rental company.  In 1999 Powertron was purchased by the Steiner Electric Company as part of a long range strategy to enter the backup generator market.  As a result of this acquisition, Steiner Electric was appointed the exclusive Kohler Power Systems distributor for northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.  Powertron has been an operating division of Steiner Electric ever since, combining the Kohler generators with their existing uninterruptible power supply and power quality products.

In 2008, the Powertron division changed its name to Steiner Power Systems in order to better reflect the breadth and depth of the products it markets.  Powertron has emerged as the preeminent name in quick connect generator Tap Boxes with our Powertron 400 and Powertron 800 Tap Boxes and related accessories of transfer switches and generator power cables.
